If you have a file system damaged as a result of a crash, boot with a
Linux live CD and run fsck on each partition.

Incidentally, ext3 and reiserfs (as well as I believe xfs and jfs) are
"journaled" file systems with much faster crash recovery (fsck) times
and enhanced robustness compared to ext2.
