My understanding is that in the U.S. the author of a posting on the Internet has automatic copyright, and therefore permission is not assumed to be granted for reproduction in another form unless the author says so.

If for example, Kevin (or someone else) saw someone claim credit for one of his postings in a commercial publication and considered it in bad taste he could demand remedies. As the automatic copyright holder Kevin has the right and means to do so.

Of course, proper citations, quotations, summaries and paraphrases are expected.
