Lopaka,
Thank you for your experiences. I too really like "what I believe to be"
the strong solid performance of W2KServer on my server and on my LAN. I
have how had to rebuild this OS 3 times, and, each time the process was
problem-free. But, I need to plan for the future. I accept that MS will
eventually turn the key on W2K* and I will be forced to upgrade. ATM I can
not afford that expense. I know it is on the horizon though...........
:) As I have completed my upgrade of my other LAN clients to XPpro, I
would like to move my server's OS to a compatible level of software. It is
odd, however, that many folks caring for servers running W2K3Server are
having several issues with ESET's A/V and the new Security Suite. Could be
why I continue with the older V2 code level.
One of these days I may even get smart about these machines called
"Server." More time needed! LOL!
Scott,
Yes, your questions are both relevant and (for me) embarrassing. ATM I can
not answer you concisely. I just do not know how to address your
questions. I will try to respond this evening after I think through this
issue. Basically, I may do practically nothing with my server. I use it
as my platform to run the "server-side" modules of my chosen ESET Business
Edition A/V software. I do NOT run DHCP, DNS, FileServer, MailServer,
FTPServer, SNMPServer, STMPServer, CommServer, WhatEverServer. I do allow
my server to be my WINS Server on my LAN. I do not run Active Directory.
The server is NOT a domain controller (yet! I am still wrestling with the
pros/cons of this). I suppose my server is just another LAN machine with
special properties. That is my best description. My server is a learning
machine so that I can grapple with "What is a server?" More
later............. :)
Thank you for your help and comments.
Best,
Duncan

I still prefer 2000 Server to 2003. I also run the free comodo firewall on
my server box.
Every once in a while I'll make a new install CD with security patches and
extras added into the install, to keep it up to date.

I truly apologize for this one. I have totally NOT kept up with this.
Sorry.
My server now runs Win2000 Server. It is at SP4. But, I suspect that this
level of OS is soon to be no longer supported and/or able to be
WinUpdate-able.
SO,.......
{When is goes I will miss it....It runs so well.}
What might I be shopping for? I have seen mention of "Server 03"
and "Server 08." Yes, I have already read through OUR threads about
the "SBS" versions of same. Not thinking I need to do a Small
Business Server just to come current; and/or support my LAN.
Can I suppose that "Server03?" is at the XP level; and, that the
"Server08?" business is about Vista-class?
Best,
Duncan
