You might want to check that the gigabit switch that you got supports jumbo
frames as that can speed PC-to-PC transfers by  a lot (WinXP and other OSes
should just default support it); I've been looking at the Netgears on Amazon
and the later versions of each of those are supposed to support jumbo (the
GS108  and GS608) and you can get the GS608 for $25 after rebate!  HTH!

As for status, the more I thought about doing it myself (and I'm cheap), 
the more I became enamored of the idea.  So...I now have a cheapie SATA 
card and will be looking at software soon.  Also, I picked up a gigbit 
switch and network card for this beast.  Up til now I've been running 
10/100 off the linksys, I'm going to connect the linksys to the switch 
and all the computers to the switch.  They should all run at 1000 speed 
while the internet will come in at the slower speed, which is still 5 or 
6 times faster than my cable internet.
