Steve,
I will second the Netgear ReadyNASDuo. Think I spent ~$350 for it. I have the RND2150. Comes ready to run w/1x 500GB drive. I found a matching drive (ok, another ~$60), so now have 2x500GB in a mirror array (raid1). Setup was close to auto-magic. But, I did cadge a lot of suggestions/help from Stienie!!!!....;) I use a pair of Seagate DB35-series drives in Raid1 in mine. I have mine on its' own USB ups also....... It is the closest I have come to a Set&Forget digital product.........of its' complexity!

I just move data around in/out for now. As time goes by I am sure I will find other duties for it. I am still building a "backup" protocol for my LAN. I do not do any video or audio streaming yet. Perhaps later. Talk to Steinie about this stuff!!!!

It has been 6 months now and I am convinced this appliance will live here forever! It did come to me with some old f/w to start that worked completely well out of the box.
I have updated to the current f/w (or OS). This tiny box is a keeper.
It is TINY! It is fairly quiet. (though I think I may have a cooling fan that likes to act up.) I believe, IIRC, it is Linux-based. It is (to me) blazingly fast. It is really really TINY! Yes, I use a Gbit LAN also. Every client talks to it fine. Every day I learn something new about this NAS. Did I mention how tiny this little box is?
Best,
Duncan

That's a good point I forgot to mention, I have a gigabit switch for
the PC's, Mac, and NAS boxen in the computer room.
Both the NAS boxes have gigbit NIC's, so data transfers really fly..

Really helps throughput for backups, etc.... :)

The Xbox and Mac in the living room are both wireless, but data
transfer still works OK. :)

I have a Thecus Yes Box (Holds two drives) has FTP Server and Itunes
Server.
Can add 2 USB drives externally also.
I have got up to 40MB (400mbs) transfer speeds via Giga port.
