I beg to differ, my Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 is a very current mobo and the
HD connection to my case with HD enabled in the BIOS will not enable me to
use my headphones. AC97 works and HD doesn't work. No burning wires yet
and it sounds fine to my old non-audiophile ears. Bad idea to clip wires
when you may find you want to sell the case down the road.

No. If you have an hd audio codec, only ever use the hd audio header.
Do not ever use the ac97 connector on an hd audio connector onboard.
So unless you have a very old motherboard, never ever use the ac97
header.. Or the smell of wires burning -may- greet you. Then clip and
discard the ac97 header. :).

Subject: Re: [H] Case wiring: AC97 and HD Audio
There are two connections wired together in both my Cooler Master cases
and one is High Def (I suspect for a 5.1 speaker setup) and the other is
AC97. On my mobo's I've never gotten the HD connection to work because I
only use the case connection for my game set (headphone/mic) so I use
AC97 and it works fine. I wouldn't cut off either of them if I were you
because you might regret it down the road. I too don't like the untidy
look but don't have a side cover window anyway.

Lots of cases have this connector that goes to the mobo to route earbugs
and mic to the front panel. Does one need both connectors (I've only
ever used one)? Mine has each for each that seem to be wyed in
together. I'd like to nip one (AC97) off just to get a tidier look.
