More precisely depending on the decoders being used and their settings you
maybe passing an interpreted 2.0 stream or optionally passing the original
hd surround sound stream over SPDIF.

You should be able to verify the MKV containers contents using Media Info to
see what audio codec was used. Not sure if that will tell you the stream is
2.0 or surround sound.

If I have a MKV file with surround sound I have to enable an option in
FFDSHOW to output straight digital to SPDIF and be sure to disable any audio
decoding.
