Zul,
OK. I will admit that you do much more with your NAS than I do with my
three. Fine. I was just sharing.
I did champion Synology; even though I use ReadyNAS.............. :)
OK, perhaps ReadyNAS is a 'novice' brand and, Synology is a 'journeyman'
prosumer brand. I just do not know.
Different strokes for different folks!

When I was in the market for a NAS a couple of years ago, I
researched for
at least 2 months before taking the plunge. I got a DS1511+ and
upgraded
the internal memory to 3Gb Myself (by adding a 2GB SODIMM).
Anyway, long story short, it's the best investment I've made. At my
home I
have 3 networked players. One in the kids room, one in the living
room and
one in our bedroom. I also have several Airport Expresses for streaming
music in the living room and bedroom.
I can stream 1080 HD content to all devices, stream music to all the
airports and the NAS does torrent downloads and I can copy files to
it via
the network as well as copying files to/from the USB to an external HDD
without breaking a sweat.
Amazing performance, amazing reliability. I am using the SHR (Synology
Hybrid RAID) FS and I have mixed and matched HDD sizes as well as
manufacturers. Everything just works!! The initial volume creation
took
24 hours though :) The web gui is nothing short of amazing.
Get the DS1512. You will not be disappointed.
The great thing is that if you do ever need extra space, you can get an
enclosure from Synology and daisy chain them and get 5 more drive
bays. I
doubt I'll ever be needing that for the present moment. I have all 5
bays
filled with 2TB's and am thinking of getting a couple of 3 TB's to
increase
the space a bit. I'm running at around 70% capacity.
Oh yeah and one more thing. I have 2 Mac's at home (a Macbook and a Mac
Mini). Both are being imaged (Time-Machine) to the Synology also. Just
friggin fantastic!!!

Gary,
I understand and salute your choice of Synology. Did you ever
investigate
the
Netgear/ReadyNAS series? I've been using the ReadyNAS since 2008 on a
suggestion of another HWG List Member; and, I have had zero trouble.
Please check this out before you drop coin:

I own a Duo-V1 (discontinued), an Ultra 2, and, an Ultra 2+. My
needs are
very
simple however; yet, my data is completely safe (to my belief anyway).
BTW, the new WDC 'REDS' are now appear to be fully qualified in the
ReadyNAS series.

I am about to take the plunge and replace my current NAS with a
DS1512+
from Synology. I am aware of the issues they had with restarts but
they
supposedly have found the issue (bad flash RAM) and fixed the
issue. I
plan on populating it using the new WD Red (3TB) drives.
I have seen mention that the price on the drives is ~180-190 but the
prices
I have seen are a lot more than that, times 5 it gets to be a fair
chunk
of
change. I have seem them at NewEgg of $260 and Amazon for $230
(when they
had them). NewEgg also had a limit of two.
So, does anyone know of any place I can get 5 of these for a decent
price? I want reliability and I think these are the best drives
available
for that, would love to hear any thoughts on my selections too. It
is a
lot of money for a NAS and I want to make sure that I am making the
right
choice.
Thanks!
