Over the years I have discovered that when it comes to academic studies of
any kind (This book was based on Rabbi Harris-Shapiro's doctoral
dissertation), the body of the work, and especially the notes and
bibliographies, are far more important than the conclusions. I saw this
work as a resource for teachers who deal with this subject, and who should
be capable of making up their own minds about the author's views. I also
felt it necessary to suggest something that would bring some balance to the
discussion, given the fact that everything suggested up to the time I sent
this reference (albeit embodying very valuable resources) seemed to have a
certain tendency of its own. Even on such a charged subject as this one,
as librarians, we need to be careful not to let our own personal views
impede the patron's access to the whole range of opinion on a subject.
