I "attended" ALA this year. Part of the time I had to work out a schedule around AJL. For the most part, I liked the presentations. I found them no less no more inspiring then last year. I do miss the in-person sessions, but was grateful for this opportunity. Unfortunately I missed Heidi's session, as I was on my to LC.

True, I did find some of the speakers uninspiring, but I think that’s the case with any such event. I had no trouble getting into the live or on-demand sessions. If a session was live, it usually became available in on-demand format after it was over. I did find a few of those programs only became available many hours or a day afterward, but was able to check back to view again or catch parts that I missed of the sessions that interested me. There were a number of engaging—and sometimes controversial—programs that I enjoyed. Of course, Heidi’s session, was absolutely a highlight.Wednesday, June 24Although, like other keynote speakers, I found the closing session featuring Natalie Portman, way too brief, I still enjoyed certain aspects of it including her discussion of some of the changes in the depictions of the critters in the stories in her debut children’s picture book, Natalie Portman’s Fables. And she was interviewed by Betsy Bird, Collection Development Manager, Evanston Public Library, who will be speaking at AJL Digital on Thursday on “Reviewing and Evaluating Picture Books.” In any case, I, too, would like to hear what others who took part in any part of the online ALA conference thought. See you all tomorrow (by the time this gets “published,” it will be tomorrow here in the Eastern Time Zone, and probably everywhere else, too). I was very disappointed with the speakers, their messages, and the format. I found it very hard to figure out how to attend sessions. The "on demand" sessions were not on demand. When I attended in person it was exciting. What did you think of the conference? All three participants, Heidi; K.C. Boyd, Library Media Specialist at Jefferson Academy in the Washington, DC Public School system; and Andrea Jamison, Librarian and Lecturer at Valparaiso University (Indiana) and Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of EMIERT, articulated their jobs, patron base, collections, charges, and challenges really well. While representing “just” two ethnic communities (on the surface), Jewish and African-American, they demonstrated the diversity and multiculturalism of both and how meaningful their work and the resources that they highlighted are. What they do is beneficial to all of their users, internal and external. Andrea, while serving as the moderator, contributed much to the discussion, not only with her questions but contributions to the conversation. A really good session. And Heidi proved once again why she is not only a Jewish kidlit meyven, but so knowledgeable way beyond her “bailiwick!” Great job! Yasher-koyekh and kol ha-kavod on your fabulous presentation, Heidi, and Emily for making sure it happened! See you all next week! Elliot ================================================Elliot H. Boyd at the EMIERT Chair's Program Promoting Multicultural Library Services in Virtual Spaces at the ALA digital conference. It was a great presentation, and the comments in the Q&A space were very positive. EMIERT is planning to make the presentation available on their website, so I will send the link so everyone can see it. How did this happen? I pushed to be on the EMIERT Program Committee. The Chair's Program was already set and was to be a very theoretical program about ethnic materials. When everything changed, the in-person program wouldn't work online, and the committee had to come up with a new program quickly, I suggested Heidi to join a DC school librarian to talk about this topic, and we are so lucky she agreed. I can't tell you how happy I am with how the program turned out. It really brought out the diversity of materials to have speakers from such different backgrounds. Thank you, Heidi, for stepping up and preparing for this program on short notice that will reach a broad audience. You are a superstar.
