I wonder how you test the EFI GRUB, do you do it on real hardware, or in Qemu? Is it supposed to work 100%?
I have tested the EFI GRUB only once, a few years ago on an Intel board with UEFI which I don't have an easy access to right now. It worked on that board, but claiming that "it is supposed to work 100%" would be an overstatement.
I'll try to debug the issue on the QEMU setup you are describing, as time permits.
