It occurs to me that there are a finite number of key game and admin and management tools, which have become indispensible to both hobby and commercial game hosting providers. Off the top of my head, I can name HLSW, Mani, HLStats, PsychoStats, zBlock, Beetle - there are more, of course.
Certainly, Valve cannot guarantee that its frequent updates do not break these applications, which most providers have come to rely on. However, I wonder if Valve could do more to foster collaboration with such symbiotic partners than it currently does. Perhaps Valve could consider a kind of a partner program for such 3rd party tool developers - distinct from whatever relationships and support it has in place for "game mod" developers. I would suggest setting some kind of bar to limit membership in such a program to credible and accepted developers - perhaps admitting to the program by application or by invitation only. This is not about eliteness - it is about focusing limited resources on issues which are critical to game hosting providers. Certainly, this would be a first in the online gaming industry. And not to denigrate this mailing list, which I have found to be very helpful over time, but I would suggest something more than a mailing list for 3rd party tool developers. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Darrel Sent: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 11:46 PM To: hlds@list.valvesoftware.com Subject: Re: [hlds] SiN 1 update released Alfred, Is there any work being done regarding the update that broke log pulling from 3rd party mods? I can't seem to get a straight answer from the HLSW team, and as I've said, it hamstrings my ability to admin my server remotely. Thanks. PS... I don't care who fixes it on what end, I just want it fixed. They're claiming no communication from Valve, you guys claim you don't support 3rd party mods, and it just ends up being extremely frustrating trying to simply run a server because it seems like you guys randomly break things, sigh. > We have released an update SiN 1.
