I had no idea what was causing it as I've always had a very snappy connection. After reading Neph's email, I realized that my rate of 10K wasn't enough, so I bumped it up to 45K and the widely spaced bars I was seeing in the net_graph went away to a large extent. I still ran across gaps when I encountered a nearby enemies (lots of hand/mouse coordination).
