A few people from this list graciously gave me access to machines that
exhibited the crash on start bug. We have found a fix and it is
available by using the beta command to the hldsupdatetool. Run the
update tool with "-beta linux" on the command line to get the fix. For
example:

./steam -command update -game cstrike -beta linux -dir .

If this fix doesn't help I would appreciate and email about your
particular OS and GLIBC version.
