I would recommend using a mount --bind instead of symlinks.

Not sure if it matters much for srcds, but it fixes issues with the server 
software I run. Issues include permission problems, and some applications I run 
can't see symlinks when they are used for folders. Only files.

how stupid of me, thanks. i've got two servers running the very same 
configuration and one of it keeps crashing. the second one has symlinks to 
several directories like ../valve, ./maps, ./sounds, etc, and the very engine 
itself. could it be the reason?
