It's important to not forget that communities don't start from nothing. You
don't put a SRCDS instance under your pillow at night and wake up with a
full server in the morning. It's not really easy to have those donations
and supporters without first being able to start somewhere. Pinion helps
you minimize the cost. If you get to the point where you can remove the
ads, great. Some people here seemed to have forgotten that starting a
community and having it become successful is probably a 100 part process
that doesn't happen overnight. Additionally, starting and maintaining an
effective community since TF2 went F2P and with the QP system is entirely
different than it was when TF2 was a new game and there were only a handful
of decent gaming communities. Those community owners have no business
thumbing their noses at those trying to begin a successful community at
this stage in TF2's lifespan, the landscape is entirely different now.
