I switched from using a Mac to using Ubuntu inside a virtualbox
instance on Windows 7. I was forced to make the change, as my cats
are very fond of knocking large expensive electronics off of high
platforms.

The experience has been good so far - gedit with gedit-mate (
http://github.com/ivyl/gedit-mate ) does lack some of the niceties of
textmate, but Windows 7 / Ubuntu are very stable. Also, having a
'work' virtualbox helps keeps me focused.
