One reason that there are performances and recordings with soprano is
because there are many more competent lyric sopranos than there are
competent high tenors.

I performed it in June with a mezzo. She wanted to sing it and asked me to
play. She sang it in C and we had a pleasant time in rehearsals and
performance.

For those looking for a recording with tenor, there are 2 recordings of
Dennis Brain performing with Peter Pears and Richard Lewis. Neill Sanders
recorded it with Robert Tear.

The salient facts are, again, that the first performance was by a tenor with
the composer playing the piano. That's an indication to me of original
performance practice. The premiere was part of Schubert's only public
concert of his works and took place on the 1st anniversary of Beethoven's
death. The soprano Josephine Frőlich sang Stänchen (Grillparzer) on the
same concert.

The text is about someone leaving a female lover. This is a fact since the
word "sie" is used throughout. Since the text is set in the first person,
one would conclude that it refers to a man leaving his girlfriend. (See
Richard Hirsh's post)

Schumann's wonderful cycle Frauenliebe und Leben is marked "Fűr eine
Singstimme" but even a great baritone would seem pretty foolish singing
those texts.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve, after a quick look on the Internet finds many recordings of this
piece by female singers.

I leave it to those wiser than me to speculate on which are the salient
facts.
