In Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suite #1, 4th Movement "Carillion" the Horn parts carry the notation, "schmetternd." According to one source this means "stopped." Our conductor isn't calling for that, and he is somewhat knowledgeable about this stuff emphasis on "somewhat."
What is the usual interpretation?
