Japan is certainly no stranger to major Earthquakes, but this one is the largest Japan or the surrounding area has ever recorded I think. The Northridge Quake, although 'only' at a 6.7, had one of the fastest ground accelerations ever recorded - at 1.7 Gs. As you can see from here, quakes of magnitude 8.5 or higher are very rare indeed: _http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/world/10_largest_world.php_ (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/world/10_largest_world.php) -William In a message dated 3/11/2011 7:50:05 A.M. This is a major disaster for Japan, with tsunami affecting the Philippines. Warnings have gone out to Gaum, Hawaii, Indonesia and the US West Coast. Early reports have it as an 8.9, by comparision the Northridge EQ that his the LA area in 1994 was a 6.7. This equake is about 100 times more powerful.
