Hans, I've got to "hit and run" this morning. There actually might be someone on the list with greater knowledge than I hold.
The earthquake scale (I believe the Richter Scale has been replaced) is a weird beast. As I understand it's a measurement at the point where the actaul movement happens. Consider what happened in Christchurch, New Zealand. The first earthquake several months ago, that did minimal damge was a greater magnitude than the most recent one that did considerable damage. The difference between the two was the first EQ happened at a much greater depth than the second. I hope that helps a little in clarifying.
