Our associate principal Duane Saetveit has always played  a 8d with a Atkinson
lead pipe.  I also have one of the original Atkinson lead pipes on my 8d.
In all the years I have heard Duane play and no matter what horn he was
playing... even a hose pipe... he always had the same beautiful sound.

I think the sound we get is the sound in our head.  I have really never had any
trouble blending in with the section on my 103.

However, when I auditioned for the San Antonio symphony many many many years
ago
:) I was told if I showed up with a horn that was "silver" Allessandro would
not
even listen to me.

So, who knows??

I'm not 100% sure. I played a Schmid double for a long time and got a little
negativity sometimes due to my sound not blending in well with 8D sections. I
didn't win a recent audition because of it - and I was in the final round, too.

I sometimes wonder if it was more of a visual thing than auditory - but I'm
probably changing to a Geyer now anyway.

Sometimes I think if we were all blind we might not even tell much of a
difference in sound. I think Ken Pope even showed something to that effect at a
symposium one year.

Good to hear that the Alex 103 may have established a beach head in LA.  Adding
further variety to horn sound in the US is to be welcomed, though Milton's post
suggests that the Kruspe/Conn sound world may be too strong to resist.

Indeed, I purchased that horn (which Bill purchased from James Stagliano) I
later sold it to Lisa Taylor who is also on this list

My Congrats Also,

It might be of interest to know that Bill Lane played on a Alex 103 when he
first came to Buffalo as con principal.  It was

later that he changed to the Conn 8d.

While on tour, an old friend told me that the LA Phil chose Andrew Bain,
principal horn in Melbourne, to fill their principal position.  I had not heard
that (some Googling confirmed it), so congrats to Mr. Bain! My friend also told
me that Mr. Bain plays on an Alex 103, which would seem to mark a different
direction for the LA horn section. Interesting news, I thought, so I figured I'd
pass it on.

All the best to all of you, worldwide,

Bob
