Big Alex was born in the 1950s (I think), while little Alex was born in 1964. Both are of the same bell size and weight, but big Alex actually has slightly smaller tubing diameter but a far freer blowing leadpipe and a fatter sound than little Alex. We should compare Alex's when you are in SF. And they are two totally different horns. I actually call one "big Alex" and the other "little Alex". Tom Greer gets a big kick out of that. But the two horns are that much different. Two different size lead pipes, two different bell sizes and one horn is much heaver and is larger than the other. The small horn... Little Alex... is pre-world war two, and is suppose to be???? a copy of the horn built for Bruno Yanacke... sorry about spelling. In the 1920s in Niagara Falls the guy that owned what is now Carborundum started his own pro band... I am told he liked to conduct.... and hired all of the first chair players from the NY Phil to go to Germany and pick out instruments for the band. There were six horns and this is the only one left. I know this about the band because one of the members of that band gave me a rundown on the history. I will be bringing that horn to SA with me. It was later that he changed to the Conn 8d. Milton Milton Kicklighter 4th Horn Buffalo Philharmonic Retired ________________________________ From: Robert N. I had not heard that (some Googling confirmed it), so congrats to Mr. Bain! My friend also told me that Mr. Bain plays on an Alex 103, which would seem to mark a different direction for the LA horn section. Interesting news, I thought, so I figured I'd pass it on.
