"Libraries don't send reference books out through
interlibrary loan." R.C.

Rebecca,

Don't you think it is a bit dangerous to generalize ? In the past, and in
the context of my experience, I found that not necessarily to be the case. I
think a lot has to do with how the individual book is cataloged. Believe it
or not, some so-called "reference books" are in general circulation in any
given library. Now I suppose since this list attracts more than a few
librarians, I will be called to task on this one and be told I am all wet,
but I know in the case of genealogy texts for instance (Burke's, Black's), I
have seen copies in both reference and general circulation, the same also
goes for Robin Gregory's book on the horn. Exceptions perhaps, but I always
ask if a text is available thorough interlibrary loan. Like so many other
endeavors in life, I have found that it never hurts to ask, and while it is
a bit dangerous to generalize, most librarians seem to bend over backwards
and go the extra mile to help a patron. As a group I believe them to be not
recognized and underappreciated and definitely underpaid.

My two euros...anyway.

Mark L.
