Whatever you do, be sure to get to your get in plenty of time to explain your situation to a gate agent politely and board promptly. Expect overhead compartment space to be at a huge premium, now that major airlines are charging $15 for the first bag, EACH WAY. Explain your situation politely again to a flight attendant as you board. You might not have a problem getting your instrument onto the plane, only to find that some other surly passenger is hell bent on avoiding the extra fee by cramming overstuffed and/or oversized carry-on wherever possible, and may not really care what's in your case.
