Closet trumpet player? ;) If you switch instruments while you're practicing, you're increasing the time you're playing on a cold instrument, which means you're increasing the amount of time you'll spend emptying water. I'd rather spend my limited time playing on a warmed-up instrument. I suppose you could put your "on deck" horn close to a space heater. Also by changing horns, you are most likely changing your playing position and posture just a little and introducing a period of adjustment. It seems kind of like changing shoes while running. If you are doing will with pair number one, why destabilize your routine? Anyway, as someone who admits to changing horns while practicing, you should be best able to tell us if it makes a difference. Spend a week practicing on only one horn, then spend a week rotating between horns, then let us know which week resulted in a greater improvement and/or enjoyment.

I know I need to warmup to play well, but what about the instrument? Does having it played for a few minutes make a difference? I ask because, for whatever reason, my practice over the last couple of days has taken the form of doing something through on one horn, putting it down, playing the same piece through on another horn, and so on, using 3 or all 4 of the horns I own: a double, two single F's, and a single Bb. Thus, all the horns except the first one are cold when I start playing on them. I'm using the same mouthpiece throughout. Thanks. -S- _______________________________________________ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/john.baumgart%40comcast.net _______________________________________________ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
