Thanks for the suggestion.

I deleted all the hplip software i had installed on the system, removed 
the printer from CUPS as a usb:// device, and installed hplip 1.6.10 from 
the installer on sourceforge.

hp-setup does not discover the printer.  A popup window reports "No 
devices found.  Please make sure your printer is properly connected and 
powered-on".

I have the ppdev module loaded in the kernel, bus lsusb and the hp tools 
show nothing.  I tried a couple of the kernels i have laying around, they 
are all 2.6.

Anything else I should look for?
