Cups error_log below showing the following:
I deleted the usb backend instance (i had just modified the last HP-setup installed printer to be usb1, since the queue was the same name I could not re create it), restarted cups, re added the hp backend via hp-setup, and then tried again,
this time the HP test page took from 10:46:33 to 10:49:33 to print,
and the PDF mentioned above was started at: 10:53:14, the first page came off at 10:57:02 and the last page at 11:31:44 (the PDF can be gotten at: http://www.weil-mclain.com/FTP/Brochures/ultraplusnt.pdf ) for a total of 37minutes!
This same PDF was printed just before on the usb instance in 3 minutes total

Phil, have you checked /var/log/messages for errors? I am assuming that you have CUPS in debug logging mode and have checked it for errors?

I.e. you use the printer's built-in PostScript interpreter
(and not Ghostscript together with the HPIJS driver).
Try the HP-Color_LaserJet_2550-hpijs.ppd
