I tried to, only to discover that the Ubuntu packages (helpfully)
don't include it! So I installed HPLIP 1.6.10 from source as described
at http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/index.html.

Printing continues to work just fine, but I'm still getting the same
behaviour with regard to scanning:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/will/Desktop/hplip-1.6.10# scanimage
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of dll to 0.
[ 30 second or so wait here... ]
scanimage: open of device
hpaio:/usb/PSC_2200_Series?serial=MY283D26QH0G failed: Error during
device I/O

The output of hp-check, now that I have it, is as follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/will/Desktop/hplip-1.6.10# hp-check

>From the above I can see that the hpaio backend is being reported as
not set up correctly. Question is, what do I need to do to set it up?
Googling has only pointed me in the direction of
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/troubleshooting/scanning.html, which just
tells me to make sure hpaio is present and uncommented in my dll.conf
file (which it is).

I'm fairly sure the ppdev error isn't relevant, as the device is USB-connected.

I'm not sure why scanimage is now finding two devices, whereas with
1.6.9 it only found one. Unless one of them is the fax? Anyhow, here
is /var/log/messages:
