Thanks for your reply.

I have been using two clean installs of Ubuntu Edgy, which comes with
HPLIP 1.6.9 pre-installed. On the second install I removed all the
hplip and hpijs packages from the system before installing HPLIP
1.6.10 from the source tarball at http://hplip.sourceforge.net/.

In both cases I experienced the problems already described.
