If you are unable to print, run:
tail -f /var/log/messages
try and print, and send any errors reported in the /var/log/messages.
Also go here: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/troubleshooting/printing.html and
follow the direction for issue 2, and the cups error log. Make sure to open
the log first, and then try to print and then send the log. The cups log
will be rather large, which is great--send the whole thing.

Dean,
The printer "Deskjet_D4100_2" is not configured using the HP backend and
therefore will not function correctly. The printer "duffy_deskjet" should
work. What happens if you run hp-testpage? I'm not entirely clear on what
your problem condition is, you want to delete the printer and then print to
it using lpr? You should be able to run "lpr -Pduffy_deskjet
<file_name_here>" and it should print. Does it not then? You said it was
printing and now it's not, did anything on your system change that you know
of?
