I was using $&(EXCERPT) which I now see might be the wrong thing to do.... Which explains everything.. I wish I was cleverer and then I would have worked out what this "and HTML-escaped with the format $&(VAR). " meant! I now see that it means if you use $&(VAR) any html tags in the variable will be converted to their escaped entities..... Oh well, there's a half a day of baffled tension I won't have again (along with more than a few handfuls of hair). my fault for copying the original without understanding it...
