Now I've tried what you proposed. I installed the latest
htdig-3.2.0b4-20030202-release and indexed only one tiny index.html without
any links. The same error about DB2 allocating memory appears. So there must
be one very basic difference between my home system and the online one.

I wonder if this might be some apache-related thing. Do you have an idea if
there are configuration options concerning that memory issue? (Apache
1.3.22)
I am not aware of any such configuration options, though I can't rule out the possibility. There might also be system level limits placed on the environment that the program is being run in. Whatever the case, the problem seems to be tied to some sort of server specific configuration. However it seems strange that you can't allocate enough for a single document database. Have you checked the permissions on the database files and their parent directories? Are you certain that the user the web server runs as can access the files? I am wondering if perhaps the problem lies somewhere other than memory allocation, but for some reason a misleading error message is being reported.
