Another newbie long-shot here ...

could it be the case that you need to fiddle with the start_url
directive in some way, given that the form of your URL is:

http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/

Thanks for the suggestion - I had thought of that earlier, but no mutation of the start_url I can think of produced anything other than access errors in the logs.
