Just a thought:

I'm running Slackware 9.1. By default, Slackware puts htdig where the
authors intended it to go (presumably), in /opt/www/htdig. If your www
directory is somewhere else (/var/www possibly), maybe you are getting
some path problems somehow. Check your paths in htdig.conf.
