Yeah, I'm not surprised that it does this--there isn't a fix for
this. The only solution I can think of is to attempt to boil the
htsearch core dump into a test for autoconf, but that might take some
time.
In the meantime, I'm going to add a FAQ entry. We should get a "Known
Problems" page though--there seem to be problems on AIX and Digital
Unix as well.
