It depends on what you set for, e.g. BINDIR.
When you did your make install, it should have done something along the
lines of making a directory, then installing a bunch of files in it
(htdig, htmerge, htfuzzy...).
Basically, if you did a 'make install' it should have put all the critical
files somewhere useful (i.e. not in htdig-3.1.2). In that case, you can
kill the whole htdig-3.1.2 source directory.
