I should have added that this was consistently happening on two platforms, linux and mac. It wasn't just a one off, it was every time. It took varying amounts of time to happen, but it always happened and the machine sat there for hours. I have a controller thread that asks for checkpoints every ten minutes and all my logs showed were about 20-30 of these checkpoint requests falling on deaf ears.
