you have to think that it would be done with the technology that was to hand at the time, he would spend lots of time with various mirror contraption type things aligning sketches until he was happy. I have used rotoscopes, epidiascopes, projectors, grant enlargers. living in that time I would certainly use all that kind of stuff, that was available to make a drawing
