I have a patch (again only locally on my machine) that disables the 'html' target and fully enables the 'xhtml' target. The latter was tagged "experimental" until that patch. The 'xhtml' target now generates valid XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0 which is necessary for processing it with, e.g., XSLT tools. If you are interested, I can supply you with my current stack of patches.
