If the creation of the registry entry were optional (e.g. would not cause the installation to fail if access is denied), this would not affect your ability to install hugin. You only would loose the comfort feature intended to build upon this key.

Of course, the plugin installers mentioned should provide a fall back method if the RegKey is missing.

Such practices could get one fired in some companies. Is it wise to lend a hand here?
