Only $(HOME)/.local/share is used for storing the private lensfun lib. /usr/local/share is not used. You can check the paths in the about dialog. There should be Path to public lensfun database: a path readable by the user, not writable, on MacOS I assume it should show the path to the lensfun files inside your bundle.
