so generated are not quite as manipulable as the RAW file from a recent vintage DSLR. For the vast majority of purposes, it's better, even on a CHDK equipped P&S, to stay with JPEG.
This might be true, especially since raw takes far longer to process. However, raw is beneficial not only for dynamic range and white balance adjustment (where your concern applies) but also for CA removal, which is far better on raw data than on jpegs.
