I'm also one of the unlucky ones who does detect the Hertford version
of the hum and it does sound very much like the Mercury
representation. I've always assumed it to be electrical in source,
since there are definate interference patterns in the waveform,
suggesting a multiple source all at the same frequency. It sounds
roughly similar to the noise emitted by the large transformers in sub
stations, but with an added rotational phased effect. It can be
clearly audible in one spot and gone if I move a metre in any
direction. Earplugs make it worse, so I don't think it's sound in the
normal sense, though background noise does cover it. I've found it's
missing altogether at coastal locations. The voices are a nuisance
too..

.......a good description of how it creates standing waves which then
disappear and reappear elsewhere............
