I am 52 years old and first noticed a humming sound in my ears about a year or so ago. It is most noticeable at night and I searched the house, turning off all electrical equipment in an effort to locate the source. When this did not effect the sound I held my ear to my neighbours' walls, thinking that maybe they had installed some electrical equipment that was vibrating through the walls. Again I could not trace any obvious source. I went out in the street to check local telphone cables etc. I wondered if it was being caused by my newly installed wireless receiver? I asked a friend who visited the house whether they could also hear a humming noise. They could not. I decided that I must just have a hearing problem and decided that if it got worse I would have to go to the doctor to have my hearing checked. I have to say that I do not notice it at work?
I realise now that it is probably no coincidence that I began to suffer with insomnia about a year ago: never before in my life have I been unable to sleep. In relation to the insomnia I have recently undertaken a course of acupuncture and have slept well since. However, the humming in my ears persists. I have tried Chinese ear candles but without any change. I have recently moved house and it feels to me that in fact the intensity of the humming has increased. I have again been turning off all of my electrical equipment at the sockets in an attempt to alleviate it but to no avail. I discovered that this condition has a name when I watched 'Have I got News for You' last night and Paul Merton derided the condition and dismissed it as a sign of madness. I found myself feeling really cross wondering how he would like to have a constant humming in his ears. However, the programme led me to google 'the Hum' and, voila, I have found that this is not something that is peculiar only to me! I guess it is not particularly promising that there is no known cause or cure but I would be interested to know whether anyone else has discovered any relief?
