The ARP by itself is pretty straight forward and not too inspiring. The
power to create new ideas though comes from combinig it with both the MIDI
effects and the Groove feature - both of which process the MIDI generated by
the arpeggiator.
What I find interesting is to set up a basic arpeggiation (like holding a
minor chord) and the trying various combinations of the MIDI play effects
and the Groove grid. The grid is particularly interesting because you can
use it to overlay a second cyclic pattern using any of its features
(velocity, gatetime, noteshift, timing offset). So you could, for instance
have a 5 note 16th pattern working in conjunction with a 16 step groove
pattern of say velocity variation.
Once you hit on an appealing combination you can always punch record and
grab the whole proceedings, including the MIDI processing effects.
Alternatively, you can leave the MIDI processing as a post-record pass. I
find this useful in some situations, but with the arp the combination really
is what makes it happen so it is hard to defer the recording of the MIDI
processing.
