These commands did the trick - or would have done the trick if my file
RADIO0d.BIN had not been *all* caps. Thanks also to Michael Rösch 
 for directing my to the dmesg tool. Onward and Upward!

Yes!
I'm currently using Angstrom but I have had no problems with Familiar 0.8.4
in 
the past.

I use:
ifconfig usb0 down (certainly needed for Angstrom, probably not for Familiar)
rmmod hx4700-acx
rmmod acx
modprobe acx
modprobe
 hx4700-acx

to bring up wifi : knock off the last 2 line to take it down.

I then run
iwconfig wlan0 essid my_wireless_net_ssid key 1a2b3c4def
ifconfig wlan0 up
udhcpc -i wlan0

with a couple of different scripts for the different networks I connect to.
These have to be run as root.
