Yes, I agree totally.  FWIW, I never imagined that the pseudo-code would be the 
right way to do it.  :-)

I wonder, too, if there's a better way to do it with the lock() semantics. 
Maybe somehow treating everything as a trylock().  (Just an idea...  Two more 
days before I can code again.  :-P)
