I have no idea if it's actually been documented, though I suspect not [at least
not by me, anyways] :).
Personally I think I'd find a 'V' distracting and just too much of a departure
from the current matrix blocks. Perhaps something like a tinted border? What
about if for virtual pattern matrix block entries, the outer 2-5 pixels around
the matrix block is made a darker shade of the base pattern's colour (or the
outside border is the original colour and the inner region is tinted)? I
wouldn't expect this to be too difficult to write, and I don't think it'd
distract too much from the flow of the matrix view.
That's just my opinion. I make no claims as to my UI design prowess :).

hi Chris, this is nice !is this documented somewhere ?  if i do a search on the
manual i cant seem to find 'virtual' anywhere ?it's good to know if it's not,
because i'm planning to update the manual, so i can include this as well

hmm ... i see what you mean with the 'shaded' option...how about this : iso
changing the color to 'shaded' for a virtual pattern, could we not put a 'V'
(as in Virtual, get it ?  ;-) on the virtual patterns ?
or some other symbol ?see attachment
