As an ISV development shop, our needs differ, somewhat. Our DEMO system in the three-way Sysplex only gets IPL'd if something is being modified or upgraded or if some kind of POR is required. The developer's TEST system follows the same schedule except when they do something that hangs or kills things and an IPL is necessary. Doesn't happen too often but they have found some unique ways to do it. My sandbox system gets IPL'd whenever I need it, usually once or twice a week.
A standing "rule" for our SE's is to let us know if they will need the DEMO system at a particular time so I don't pull the plug at an inopportune time. I'm three weeks into my last Sysplex-wide IPL with no need to plan any for a while. The only "scheduled" IPL's are during the time changes and the IMS's are the only seriously affected systems. One on eastern time and one on central time. The different departments in hospitals use the computer at different times, with E/R having priority over any changes that we wish to perform. What we have found is that a midweek IPL in the evening usually works best for us. We have a standing schedule to IPL once a month. The last IPL was in February. For one reason or another, the IPL has been bypassed for four months. The only fallout from this has been that our system changes are accumulating and we ran into fragmented storage in the initiators(second time in two years). We corrected the latter with new Control-O rules to cycle the inits monthly. The system changes simply have to slide from month to month until we can actually implement them with an IPL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
